Society Display at Brickton Art Center's Artapalooza—2/3/07! Lauren Maloney represented the Society with an art station featuring a hands-on embossing project for children, evocative of the Arts Colony present in Park Ridge 100 years ago. The Brickton Art Center hosted Artapalooza, an all-day, all-art event on Saturday, February 3rd, 2007. Interactive projects were on the program -- live art demonstrations, painting a community mural and enjoying musical and spoken word entertainment and facepainters.
Historical Society Salutes Lynda Tourloukis
Park Ridge resident Lynda Tourloukis is now known to be the creator of the poster artwork found in the Society Museum early in 2004.
At that time, we found a collection of posters tucked behind the pump organ on the front porch at 41 South Prairie Avenue. The large paper posters, twelve in number, extensively depicts people, places and events in the history of Park Ridge, joined together by a ‘Know Your Community’ theme.
While no attribution to the project’s creator was found on the artwork, it was assumed from the content that the display had been used in an educational setting intended for scouts or students of elementary school age while present at the Museum. Society President Paul Adlaf was intrigued by the artwork as it speaks so accurately and in detail of our local history, and clearly was composed by someone who enjoyed sharing that history. He set out to locate the artist, and consulted with local education, scouting and student communities for suggestions as to who might have put together such artwork. Nothing came of this effort, including an appeal in the local newspapers for more information.
New Society Secretary Lauren Maloney took up the challenge of this puzzle, and sent a letter to all of the address shown on the poster, requesting help in identifying the artist. Lynda Tourloukis responded promptly, and gave us the details surrounding her work. The poster art was created by her in 2000 as a project to allow the Girls Scouts in her daughter Claire’s troop at Roosevelt School to learn more about their community. For this purpose, the display was originally mounted on the walls of the gymnasium at Roosevelt School, and only later found its way to the Society offices at 41 South Prairie Avenue.
The Historical Society commends Lynda Tourloukis for undertaking such an extensive and thorough project to bring the good story of Park Ridge local history to the Girl Scouts at Roosevelt School. |

Prospect Avenue Façade Renovations Pictured: Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 33 South Prospect, October, 2006. "Left to Right: Dick Barton, President of the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce, Paul Adlaf, Society President, Mayor Howard Frimark, Chelle O'Connell, Executive Director of the Chamber and Tim Perry, building owner. The Society lent 100-year-old photos of this building to Mr. Perry to aid in historically accurate facade renovation. Take a look in the windows as you're passing by; remnants of the original pressed tin ceiling are now visible above the window displays. The facade of this building was previously obscured with thick aluminum paneling. The Society compliments Tim Perry for this tasteful facade renovation." |
